Evolution 2020
Chronological Evolution in Pandemic Uncertainty
Each day during the the pandemic lockdown of 2020, I escaped into nature to find balance, relief, and insight. I wasn't necessarily looking to create a project (I never had a plan or real photo gear), but every so often I would record little details and moments that I encountered on my adventures. I love the sacred moment between winter and spring; everything is dead but in a way that is clearly preparing to nurture life. This time, though fraught, taught me so much. The music of ambient artist Gigi Masin has accompanied me through the past several years. I think of his work as aural alchemy; it blends into my being in a way that gives me a true sense of peace. His beautiful, soothing music bears a raw minimalist sound, and his new album 'Calypso' has accompanied me on many of my adventures in nature this spring. This music helped me get through this time with my spirit intact, and I appreciate his work very much. It was a random decision to set these simple videos to music, but I'm so glad I did. They feel good, even in their imperfection. The images were taken on my iPhone from 21 March - 25 May, 2020. They are presented in the order I took them, and somehow they fit the music perfectly. Music: "Calypso" by Gigi Masin, 2020. Thanks to the maestro for giving me permission to share this video with his song. Grazie da cuore, Gigi. p.s. About that last shot of the powerful Mississippi, which I took on the evening of my 45th birthday: little did I know that just a few minutes later and a few miles down the city streets, a man named George Floyd would be taking his last breath. This night marked the end of one era, and the beginning of another in the collective social experience that has been the spring of 2020. Ceaseless transitions.
